Solidarity with the Nepali Community
September 10, New York– Adhikaar joins communities in Nepal and across the diaspora during this painful time. The events of September 8th and what unfolded after remind us what happens when corruption and power go unchallenged. A youth-led peaceful protest against authoritarianism quickly escalated to violence, which resulted in nineteen young lives claimed in a few hours and over 1,000 injured.
For Adhikaar communities already living at the margins— immigrant workers, students, and families who have made a home in the U.S but whose hearts and relationships are tied to Nepal, the pain is deep and personal; many will likely experience more obstacles in visiting their loved ones, while they encounter racism, xenophobia, and immigration challenges in this country.
Our fights and our movements are connected. Just as we demand dignity and safety for immigrant workers and families in the U.S, we call on the international community to listen to the voices of those most at-risk in Nepal and to support justice and a peaceful transition.
We also call on all of us, wherever we are, to maintain peace and reject violence. The youth of Nepal have shown us that when they are determined to bring about change, they can make it happen. Now is the time to realign and to keep building toward a peaceful, equitable, inclusive nation where all voices are valued.
Adhikaar is here to hold space for our community to come together, share, and heal.
Please take care of yourselves and each other. We will keep standing side by side, across borders, for justice and peace.
In solidarity,
Adhikaar
