NYC Nepali Community Pushing for Earthquake Aid
NEW YORK — As massive earthquakes and aftershocks continue to devastate Nepal, hearts are breaking in this New York City borough where many of the state's 6,800 Nepali immigrants have settled over the years.
In the weeks since the first and strongest earthquake struck, Queens has become the epicenter for relief efforts, memorials and vigils as the population of immigrants and those of Nepali descent come together to care for friends and family suffering on the other side of the world. Diversity Plaza in Queens, the site of several memorial vigils, has become a gathering point for locals seeking updates and information about the situation in Nepal.
