Adhikaar for Human Rights and Social Justice

Adhikaar, meaning rights in Nepali, is a New York-based nonprofit organization working with Nepali-speaking communities to promote human rights and social justice for all. Established in 2005, Adhikaar is the only organization providing essential services and mobilizing the Nepali-speaking community to raise our voices and take collective action against injustices on issues affecting us. We achieve this through organizing, community education, grassroots advocacy, leadership development, and direct services. Our program areas are workers’ rights, immigrant rights, access to healthcare, and language justice. It is a fast-paced office with many programs going on at once and the right candidate will thrive in such an environment.

DESCRIPTION

The Policy Manager will be responsible for coordinating the federal, state and local policy needs for Adhikaar’s overall programs, campaigns and government funding work. The Policy Manager will support other program areas as needed. The Policy Manager will report directly to the Director of Campaigns & Communications with reporting responsibilities to the Executive Director as needed. The Policy Manager will work closely with Adhikaar’s growing staff in program planning, implementation, and evaluation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities for the Policy Manager will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Policy Strategy & Implementation

  • Manage and oversee Adhikaar’s overall policy efforts amongst the various areas of work in order to build a cohesive policy strategy for Adhikaar
  • Oversee and lead development of Adhikaar’s legislative and policy priorities and regular update Adhikaar staff and membership
  • Track legislation relevant to Nepali-speaking low income immigrants in the US (local to national) based on Adhikaar’s programmatic priorities and policy agenda
  • Support program staff and Directors on legislative and policy-specific needs for campaigns 
  • Analyze legislation and proposed policies and communicate key provisions and implications to staff
  • Proactively brainstorm and develop policy briefs, one-pagers,  white papers, statements and testimonies as needed in support of Adhikaar’s policy and campaign agenda
  • Track and testify at local and state hearings relevant to Adhikaar’s policy agenda, services and campaigns 
  • Coordinate and facilitate policy-specific training needs with organizing staff for members. This includes but is not limited to coordination of joint or issue-based meetings, training, strategy sessions, and actions
  • Support strategy development and implementation of budget campaigns with Development team
  • Represent Adhikaar in policy coalitions, governmental meetings/engagements and partnerships
  • Support the Director of HR and Operations on compliance with lobbying laws and IRS regulations
  • Lead on regular reporting and tracking of programmatic deliverables and progress
  • Manage coordination and relationship development of political and government contacts for program and campaign work

Other

  • Coordinate development and implementation of Adhikaar’s Civic Engagement project
  • Support grant-related proposals, budgets, and reporting 
  • Coordinate and/or manage fellow, volunteers and interns
  • Maintenance of database i.e. tracking bills, member testimonials and policy contacts and relationships
  • Support Adhikaar’s program staff with ongoing campaigns
  • Provide language assistance as needed 
  • Provide support for Adhikaar’s special events
  • Support Adhikaar’s fundraising efforts 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • At least 5-6 years of experience in policy analysis or advocacy, preferably on immigration and/or workers’ rights issues
  • Demonstrates commitment to Adhikaar’s mission, vision and core values
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and a wide variety of professional backgrounds and experiences
  • Attention to detail is a must
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; experience in policy and advocacy writing a plus
  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office, Google Drive, as well as social media tools 
  • Experience in project management skills, research/data and tracking
  • Ability to work in a team as well as lead independent projects
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a fast-paced work setting 
  • English required, Nepali preferred 
  • Must be available for travel and work engagement after-hours on an as-needed basis

Preferred:

  • Experience working in either directly in government or with government-facing institution and experience advocating/lobbying in groups with coalitions
  • An understanding of the political landscape and political analysis of workers rights, immigrant rights, and gender justice issues

  • Full-time Position
  • Location – The location for this position is in New York City where the current staff are based 
  • Salary: $75,000
