Title​: Civic Engagement Intern (Temporary and part-time)

Reports to: Policy Manager 

Time: This is a temporary, part-time hourly contract position (estimated at 15 hours a week)

Stipend/Wage: $20/hour

Duration​: Sept 1, 2023 – Jan 31, 2024 (with a possibility for extension)

Position Summary​: The Civic Engagement Intern will support the organization’s campaign to educate and mobilize the Nepali-speaking community around integrated voter engagement for the New York City elections in 2023. The Intern will work alongside community organizers on member outreach, Get-Out-the-Vote work, volunteer training and outreach, voter education and data management. They will also provide programmatic, communications, and data entry and administrative support to the campaign. 

Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Assist with coordination and implementation of voter registration/pledges, and Get-Out-the-Vote work
  • Record, track and report data progress of member outreach in database
  • Coordinate and lead on outreach events for Adhikaar and within the community, i.e. phone banking, door-to-door knocking, candidate forums etc.
  • Assist in development and translation of civic education and political education materials.
  • Coordinate volunteers and members on community outreach, phone/text banking drives and government 101 and 102 political education series.
  • Assist with office administration work: answering telephone calls, doing member intakes, printing/photocopying materials for events and outreach
  • Assist new citizens from citizenship prep with voter registration/pledges. 
  • Participate in civic engagement-related coalition meetings with supervisor
  • Other organizing activities as needed 

Skills & Qualifications 

Required:

  • Demonstrates commitment to Adhikaar’s mission and vision
  • An interest in community outreach and in developing skills in civic engagement, immigrant rights, and worker rights campaigns.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and a wide variety of professional backgrounds and experiences
  • Excellent communication skills
    • Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
    • Ability to work in a team as well as lead independent projects
    • Willingness to travel and work some evenings and weekends
  • Competence in Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Powerbase as well as social media tools
  • Bi-lingual: Nepali and English; additional skills in Tibetan a plus

Preferred:

    • An understanding of the political landscape and political analysis of workers rights, immigrant rights, and gender justice issues
    • Some experience with community outreach and in civic engagement, immigrant rights, and worker rights campaigns
    • Experience running in-person and/or virtual phone and text banking sessions with volunteers (preferably with VAN)
