Dear friends of Adhikaar,
We are excited to announce that after a rigorous search process we have appointed our new Executive Director, Pabitra Benjamin. A supporter since 2010, Pabitra was elected and has served as an active board member to the organization since 2015, demonstrating a strong commitment to facilitating staff and board leadership as well as pressing us to deepen our political analysis and strategies.
Pabitra’s life and work are rooted in community. Pabitra immigrated to the US when she was 7 with her parents. She has lived in Nepal and in various states all over the US since then. Growing up in a working class household, her passions for community organizing grew out of this experience. She began organizing as a teenager in her hometown of Madison, Wisconsin and then later as a student organizer at the University of Wisconsin, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts. As a student organizer with the Multicultural Student Coalition Pabitra had her first experiences in fundraising, successfully helping raise the organization’s overall budget from $500,000 to $1 million. She has since gone on to manage complex budgets of a variety of funded projects over the course of her career.
Pabitra brings to Adhikaar strong and diverse alliances, seasoned and developed over the last two decades of her life, blending an intersectional approach to race, class, caste, gender and ethnicity. We are excited for this timely perspective to be at the leading edge of our work. Pabitra also brings a holistic approach to leadership, believing that by nurturing relationships among staff she manages and all stakeholders with whom she interacts, we stand stronger and more united in creating the change we seek.
During her career, Pabitra has served in leading organizing efforts, most recently with Amnesty International USA as their field director and interim campaign manager for gun violence and criminal justice. Her journey has included lead staff positions with networks and grassroots organizations including the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance, the Rights Working Group, Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote and Fair Wisconsin/Action WI Education Fund.
Pabitra joins Adhikaar’s leadership at a time of immense growth. Over the last 11 years, Adhikaar has become a platform for Nepali-speaking immigrants and workers as leaders of the social justice movement. We were once a small volunteer-run organization and now out of our homebase in Woodside, Queens, our staff of 11 connects our membership of thousands to efforts across the country and even across the globe, leading on issues related to low-wage workers and emerging communities. Under Adhikaar’s first Executive Director, Luna Ranjit, we found our wings. As we prepare for the days and years ahead, we know that Pabitra is not a newcomer to deep challenges. With her at the helm she will bring great unity to our movement and together we will find a way to soar.
Pabitra will begin her tenure in March 2017. We look forward to introducing Pabitra to you and to continuing our partnership. Your support of Adhikaar has meant a great deal to us and without you we could not be where we are today.

आदरणीय दिदीबहिनी, दाजुभाई तथा शुभचिन्तक ज्यूहरु,
हाम्रो अथक प्रयास र मेहनत पश्चात अधिकारको नयाँ कार्यकारी निर्देशकको पदमा पवीत्रा बेन्जामिन ज्यूलाई नियुक्त गर्ने सौभाग्य पाएकोमा हामी अत्यन्तै गौरवान्वित भएको महसूस गरिरहेका छौं।
उहाँले यो संस्थालाई सन् २०१० देखि २०१५ सम्म यथासक्य सहयोग गर्नु भएको हो र सन् २०१५ देखि उहाँ अधिकारको कार्यकारिणी सदस्य रहनु भयो। अहिले आएर अधिकारको कार्यकारी निर्देशकको कार्यभार सम्हाल्न र यो संस्थालाई हाँक्न स्वीकार गर्नु भएकोमा पनि सम्पूर्ण अधिकार परिवार गौरवान्वित भएको छ। उहाँसंग रहेको राजनीतिक विश्लेषण र सवल नेतृत्वको सीप एवं क्षमताबाट ‘अधिकार’ निश्चय नै सम्पूर्ण रुपले लाभान्वीत हुने विश्वास हामी सबैले गरेका छौं।
उहाँको जीवन सामुदायिक विकासका गतिविधिसँग सम्पूर्ण रुपले आवद्ध रहेको छ। श्रमिक वर्गका बीच हुर्केको उहाँको जीवन सामुदायिक कार्यमा कहिले नेपाल र कहिले अमेरिकामा सक्रिय रहदैं आएको छ। उहाँले आफ्नो किशोरावस्थामा, विस्कन्सिनको म्याडिसनबाट सामुदायिक गतिविधि आरम्भ गर्नु भएको हो र आफ्नो कलेजको विद्यार्थी जीवनमा पनि यसलाई निरन्तरता दिनु भयो। उहाँमा समुदायलाई संगठित गर्ने अतुलनीय संगठन क्षमता मात्र नभएर आर्थिक व्यवस्थापनको पनि गहीरो खुवी रहेको छ। उदाहरणका लागि, उहाँले मल्टीकल्चरल स्टूडेण्ट सेन्टरलाई संगठित गरी चन्दा संकलन गर्ने, कोष निर्माण गर्ने र ५ लाख देखि १० लाख डलर सम्मको बजेट निर्माण गर्नु भएको छ। त्यस बेला देखि उहाँले अन्य आयोजनाहरुका ठूला बजेट निर्माण र कार्यन्वयन समेत गर्नु भएको छ। विगत दुई दशक देखि पवीत्राजीले विभिन्न जात जाति, वर्ण, वर्ग र लिंग प्रतिको विभेद मेटाउने र अन्तर समन्वय कायम गर्ने दिसामा गर्नु भएको संघर्ष अनि यस कार्यमा उहाँलाई प्राप्त सफल अनुभवले अधिकारको महान् अभियानमा निश्चय नै थप उर्जा प्राप्त हुनेछ। जुन समयमा जुन किसिमको नेतृत्व अधिकारलाई खाँचो छ पवीत्राजीको पद बाहाली एकदमै ठीक समयमा भएको हामीले महसूस गरेका छौं। पवीत्राजीले अहिले सम्मको आफ्नो सक्रिय जीवनमा संगठन गर्ने नेतृत्वदायी भूमिका निर्वाह गर्नु भएको छ। सव भन्दा पछिल्लो समय, उहाँ एमनेष्टी इण्टरनेशनल यू.एस.ए.मा फिल्ड डाइरेक्टर (Field Director of Amnesty International USA) रहनु भयो र बन्दूकीय हिंशा (Gun violence) तथा आपराधिक न्याय (Criminal justice) सम्वन्धी अन्तरिम अभियान व्यवस्थापकको रुपमा कार्य गर्नु भयो। यसदेखि बाहेक उहाँले जनस्तरमा सञ्जाल फैलिएका संस्थाहरु, जस्तै नेशनल क्वीर एशियन प्यासिफिक आइल्याण्डर एलाएन्स (National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance), दी राएट्स वर्किङ्ग ग्रुप (the Rights Working Group), एशियन एण्ड प्यासिफिक आइल्याण्डर अमेरिकन भोट एण्ड फेयर विस्कन्सिन/ एक्सन WI एडुकेशन फण्ड (Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote and Fair Wisconsin/Action WI Education Fund) आदिमा नेतृत्वदायी ओहदामा रहेर आफ्नो कार्यकुशलताको परिचय दिइसक्नु भएको छ। पवीत्राजीको नेतृत्व ‘अधिकार’ले यस्तो समयमा पाएको छ जब ‘अधिकार’ले एउटा आकार लिइसकेको छ यसको व्यवस्थापन र सञ्चालनले एउटा गति पक्डिसकेको छ। अहिले भन्दा ११ बर्ष अघि लुना रञ्जित र अरु तीनजना स्वयमसेवीहरु द्धारा सञ्चालित सानो संगठनको रुपमा उदाएको यो संस्था ‘अधिकार’का सह संस्थापक तथा प्रथम कार्यकारी निर्देशक लुना रञ्जितको नेतृत्वमा क्रमशः झांगिदै गएको हो। यो संस्था नेपाली भाषी आप्रवाशी एवं यहां काम गर्ने समूदायको सामाजिक हक, अधिकार र न्याय कायम गराउने दिशामा एउटा गतिलो मञ्च बनेको छ। अहिले न्यूयोर्क, क्वीन्सको उडसाइडमा हाम्रो कार्यलय छ र ११ जना कर्मचारी सहित हजारौं सदस्य रहेको एउटा वृहद् संस्थाको रुपमा निम्न आय भएका श्रमिक, मजदूर जस्ता नव समूदायको हक अधिकार स्थापित गराउन सक्रिय संस्थाको रुप लिई सकेको छ। आगामी दिनहरुमा हाम्रा योजना तथा कार्यक्रम र चुनौतिहरुलाई सशक्त एवं प्रभावकारी रुपमा अगाडि बढाउन पवीत्राजीको नेतृत्व अत्यन्त सक्षम रहने कुरामा हामी विश्वस्त छौ। उहाँ यो संस्थाको लागि कुनै नयाँ व्यक्तित्व हुनुहुन्न। हाम्रो आन्दोलन र हाम्रो अभियान अझ वढी एकतावद्ध तथा कटिवद्धता रहनेछ र हामी सबै यस अभियानमा उहाँको साथमा हातेमालो गर्ने वचनवद्धता व्यक्त गर्दछौं। पवीत्राजीले आफ्नो कार्यभार यही सन् २०१७ को मार्च महिनामा आरम्भ गर्नु हुनेछ। यो संस्था ‘अधिकार’ तपाई हाम्रै निम्ति हो र हामी सबैका लागि सर्वोपरि छ। यहांहरुकै साथ र सहयोगले हामी यहांसम्म आइपुगेका छौं। यहांहरुबाट आर्थिक लगायत अन्य सहयोग, समर्थन र सहकार्य आगामी दिनहरुमा पनि कायम रहनेछ भन्ने हामीले आशा एवं विश्वास लिएकाछौं । अधिकारका संगठन तथा सामाजिक वकालत निर्देशक नर्बदा क्षेत्री ज्यू खुशी व्यक्त गर्दै भन्नुहुन्छःअधिकारको नयाँ कार्यकारी निर्देशक पदमा पवीत्रा बेन्जामिन बहिनीलाई हार्दिक स्वागत गर्न चाहन्छु। हामी नेपाली भाषी सीमान्तकृत भित्रका वर्गमा पर्छौँ। त्यसैले हाम्रो नेपाली समुदायलाई अर्को तहमा परिवर्तन र पहिचान दिलाई सामाजिक न्यायको क्षेत्रमा रहेको उहाँको सक्रिय अनुभव र सशक्त नेतृत्वले अधिकारलाई अझ थप उचाँई दिलाउन मद्धत पुग्नेछ। उहाँसंग सिक्न र अझ नेतृत्व विकास गर्ने अवसर पाउँदा हामी सबैलाई खुशी र गर्वको अनुभूति भएको छ। अन्तमा, नयाँ कार्यकारी निर्देशक पवीत्रा बेञ्जामिनलाई तपाईहामी सबैले स्वागत र सहयोग गरौं भनी सबैसंग हार्दिक अनुरोध गर्दछौं।
